Ad watch

I think I am one of the few people that watches TV ads critically, and I'd like to offer a quick comment about them.

When was the last time you saw a man portrayed as being intelligent? I have noticed a disturbing (at least to me) trend where men are portrayed as idiots, often with a condescending wife standing nearby to protect the poor sap from himself.

I guess that men, and usually white men, are fair game. What kind of message are we sending to the impressionable youngsters watching TV?

Men being portrayed on TV as fools is the least of our problems. Men are screwed in schools, as the latest academic fad is to try to convince women to join fields they generally don't want to join, like physics and math. In highschools, the boys are largely forgotten for all the "math can be COOL" propaganda thrown patronizingly at girls. The wisdom of liberalism: spend your time and energy trying to get enough women to become mathematicians to match your knee-jerk assumptions about the way the world should be, neglect the people who actually want to do science and engineering, wonder why we have a shortage of scientists and engineers, and use as argument to repeat process at step one.
